The tradition of Unity candles represent the joining of two families and two lives.

 

The two family candles are lit by a representative from the bride's side and one from the groom's.

This is usually the mothers or a "secondary sponsor".

The couple then lights the unity candle from the family candle's flames symbolising their union.
